"The following locations are open to outside guests. Reservations are recommended." The Viceroy Los Cabos FAQ carries that line today. For anyone living at Tortuga Bay, it tells you more about the resort's late-September relaunch than any of the renovation coverage.
The Viceroy's address is Paseo Malecón San José, Lote 8, in the San José hotel zone, the same stretch of beachfront Tortuga Bay shares. The resort closed earlier this year for a property-wide renovation. It is coming back with a new Italian market, a hidden bar, and a rebuilt version of its best-known dining room. For a neighbor, what matters is which doors open to someone who isn't checking in. The answer splits cleanly. The venues with published access for outside diners are the ones that were there before the renovation. The two new ones haven't said.
The door list, venue by venue
The FAQ names five places open to outside guests: Casero Restaurant, Cielomar Rooftop, Awacate, NIDO, and Otro Bar. It also names what stays closed to non-guests: Nidito Beach + Poolside Bar and the resort pools, which are "open to hotel guests and residents only." "Residents" in that sentence refers to people who live at the Viceroy. A Tortuga Bay address doesn't count.
| Venue | What it is | Published hours | Outside diners |
|---|---|---|---|
| Casero | Home-style Mexican with Baja influence | Breakfast 7–11 a.m., lunch noon–4 p.m., dinner 6–10 p.m. | Yes, per FAQ |
| Cielomar Rooftop | Rooftop live-fire cooking and wood-fired pizza | Wed–Mon, 5:30–10 p.m. | Yes, per FAQ |
| Awacate | Mexican kitchen built on Baja traditions and handmade tortillas | Not published | Yes, per FAQ |
| NIDO | All-day restaurant in the woven nest | Tue–Sun, 6–10 p.m. on Viceroy's site; 6–9:30 p.m. on OpenTable | Yes, per FAQ |
| LUMA, listed in the FAQ as Otro Bar | Wine and tequila bar, plus Mexican coffee and pastries | Daily, 7 a.m.–9 p.m. | Yes, if it is the same room |
| Nodo Market | New Italian market, café and restaurant | Not published | Not stated |
| Archaea | New hidden bar | Not published | Not stated |
| Nidito | Beach and poolside seafood and cocktails | Daily, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. | No |
The LUMA row needs a note. Viceroy's LUMA page describes the tequila and wine bar, but its photo and map still point to Otro Bar. The FAQ's public list uses the Otro Bar name and doesn't mention LUMA at all. It looks like the same room under a new name. The website hasn't finished catching up, so ask when you book.
The two newest rooms are the two unanswered ones
Nodo Market is the headline addition. Viceroy says the name is Italian for "node" and describes a full day in one room: "Beginning each day with espresso and pastries, then transitioning to market-style dining and light Mediterranean fare in the afternoon, and finally, shifting to a full-service restaurant as the evening unfolds." Executive Chef Salvatore Molina leads it, cooking Italian technique with regional produce and seafood.
On paper, a morning espresso counter on the same hotel-zone beachfront is the most neighbor-friendly thing the renovation added. Viceroy hasn't published hours, a reservation method, or anything about outside diners for it. The Nodo page, which went up on September 21, gives only the resort's main phone line, extension 73500, and the concierge email.
Archaea has the same gap. Viceroy describes it as a hidden bar with no printed menu. It is built around rare spirits, and the bartenders compose drinks for each guest. Resident's August coverage put it at 24 seats. With so few seats, access policy matters even more than it does at Nodo. Like Nodo, its page lists no hours and no booking channel. Neither venue appears on the FAQ's outside-guest list. They aren't on the guest-only list either.
That's the pattern at the Viceroy this fall. The rooms getting the most attention are the ones a neighbor has to ask about. The rooms a neighbor can plan around are the ones that were already there.
What changed inside the rooms you could already book
The older venues on the public list got real changes of their own, and Nido got the biggest. Viceroy kept the woven, nest-shaped structure and rebuilt what happens inside it. There's a new integrated bar and a sushi counter, and seating went from 54 to 80. The room now runs from breakfast buffet to late-night drinks. Twenty-six extra seats in a room that small change what an evening there feels like. Before, Nido was a set-piece dinner. Now it has a bar where you can have a drink and a few pieces of sushi.
The way in changed too. The Cabo Sun reports that the water mirrors, the shallow reflecting pools that run through the property, were restored in line with original architect Miguel Ángel Aragonés's vision and given a new contrasting color. The main lobby moved toward warmer Baja textures and colors. Casero overlooks those water mirrors, so a weekday lunch between noon and 4 p.m. is a low-effort way to see the renovation without planning a whole evening.
Cielomar's locals rate and the weekly rhythm
Cielomar is the one venue with a published price break for people who live here. Its OpenTable listing carries an offer titled "20% off locals!" with these terms: "Enjoy a 20% discount when you make a reservation through Open Table and present a valid national ID upon arrival." The offer doesn't say which documents count as a valid national ID. If you plan to use a residency card or another document, confirm before you go rather than finding out at the host stand.
The same listing gives the practical details: smart casual dress, valet parking, AMEX, Mastercard and Visa accepted, and the phone number 624 104 9999. OpenTable was taking Cielomar bookings for September 27 and showed several reservations made that day. That's a good sign the rooftop is up and running this week.
The two dinner rooms also cover each other's day off. Cielomar is closed Tuesdays and Nido is closed Mondays, so one of them is serving dinner every night of the week. Casero serves dinner from 6 to 10 p.m., and Viceroy doesn't list a closing day for it.
Before booking from Tortuga Bay, a few things are worth settling:
- For Nido, OpenTable's 9:30 p.m. and Viceroy's 10 p.m. don't agree. Book on the earlier time.
- For Cielomar's locals rate, book through OpenTable, since the offer depends on it, and confirm which ID the host stand accepts.
- For Nodo or Archaea, contact the concierge at [email protected] or +52 624 104 9999 and ask directly whether outside diners are seated and how.
- For a beach afternoon, Nidito and the pools are closed to non-guests, so plan a beach day around the public list instead.
A reopening date that depends on who you ask
The published dates don't match. Viceroy's FAQ says the resort "will reopen on September 21, 2026." Today is September 27, and the FAQ still says the resort is temporarily closed. The resort's "Reimagined" page gives a broader window, "unveiled in late September 2026." On September 14, the Cabo Sun described doors opening that day and, in the same article, guests returning at the end of the month. The Cabo Magazine wrote on September 21 that the property would debut in late September. Three of the four point to late September, and the Cabo Sun piece points both ways at once. For this week, the safest assumption is that some venues are open and serving while the resort's own website hasn't caught up.
That timing puts the Viceroy's first full month right before San José's regular season picks up. The Gallery District Association runs the San José del Cabo Art Walk every Thursday evening from 5 to 9 p.m., November through June. The association's page gives that standing schedule rather than a dated opening night for this season. On the calendar, the first Thursday of November 2026 is November 5. Nido is open Thursdays and Cielomar is open Thursdays, so for Tortuga Bay the new Viceroy fits easily into a week that already includes the Art Walk.
